Question

3. On their first date, Donna asks Mike to guess the date of her birth, not including the year. a. What is the probability that Mike will guess correctly? (Ignore leap years.) b. Would it be unusual for him to guess correctly on his first try? c. If you were Donna, and Mike did guess correctly on his first try, would you believe his claim that he made a lucky guess, or would you be convinced that he already knew when you were born? d. If Donna asks Mike to guess her age, and Mike's guess is too high by 15 years, what is the probability that Mike and Donna will have a second date? r cut off valuel IAT

Explanation / Answer

a. If we ignore leap years, then we have 365 days in a year. Now Donna's birthday would be from one of the 365 days. Now Mike can choose any of the 365 days, out of which only one date is correct. So the required probability is 1/365 =0.0027 .

b. Yes, it would be absurd if he guesses correctly on his first try, because the probability is too less. Not even close to 1/2.

c. If I would be Monna, I would not believe that he made a guess, I would rather believe that he already knew the date of my birth.

d. Probability is a mathematical concept, whereas possibility is a categorical concept. The question is a subjective one. One cannot calculate a numercal value of the probability of the event. But one can definitely say what is the possibility of this type of event.

Here if given scenario happens, one must say that the possibility that they will have a second date is almost null.

ie. there is almost no posibility.
