Question

A study is conducted to see how effective aspirin is in reducing temperature in children. Five (5) children suffering from influenza had their temperatures taken immediately before and 1 hour after administration of aspirin (Note, in general aspirin should only be given to small children under the direction of a physician because of a risk of Reyes syndrome). The results are given below. We would like to conduct a paired differences t-test for this situation to see if the difference is significantly greater than 0. We would like to look at the difference (Before-After). Calculate the appropriate test statistic for this test.

Explanation / Answer

Paired t-test

data: before and after
t = 1.4801, df = 4, p-value = 0.1065
alternative hypothesis: true difference in means is greater than 0
95 percent confidence interval:
-0.5371902 Inf
sample estimates:
mean of the differences
1.22

ans>the appropriate value of the test statistic is t=1.4801
