Skeletal muscle is a form of striated muscle fibersmuscletissue containing muscle fibers and axon nerve endings containingmuscle fibers, existing under control of the muscle fibers somaticnervous system. It is one of three major muscle types, the othersbeing cardiac and smooth muscle. As its name suggests, skeletalmuscle is linked to bone by bundles of collagen fibers known astendons.Skeletal muscle is made up of individual components known as musclefibers. These fibers are long, cylindrical, multinucleated cellscomposed of actin and myosin myofibrils repeated as a sarcomere,the basic functional unit of the cell and responsible for skeletalmuscle's striated appearance and forming the basic machinerynecessary for muscle contraction. The term muscle refers tomultiple bundles of muscle fibers held together by connectivetissue.
Cardiac muscle is a type of involuntary striated muscle found inthe walls of the heart, specifically the myocardium. Cardiac musclecells are known as cardiac myocytes (or cardiomyocytes). Cardiacmuscle is one of three major types of muscle, the others beingskeletal and smooth muscle. The cells that comprise cardiac muscleare sometimes seen as intermediate between these two other types interms of appearance, structure, metabolism, excitation-coupling andmechanism of contraction. Cardiac muscle shares similarities withskeletal muscle with regard to its striated appearance andcontraction, with both differing significantly from smooth musclecells.

Cardiac muscle cells, like all tissues in thebody, rely on an ample blood supply to deliver oxygen and nutrientsand to remove waste products such as carbon dioxide.
