Explanation / Answer

The A,B, AB refers to the type of Antigen found on the rbcsurface. For type A blood, they have A antigen. Becuaseof this, their immune system won't attack A antigen (A antigen is"self") so they can receive A blood type. However, theirimmune system will attack B antigen (i.e. will have antibodies toit already made) b/c its not "self". So giving B blood to Awill elicit a strong immune reaction. Person with O bloodtype has no Antigens so no matter who gets the blood, no immunereaction is elicited (O is known as universal donor) The + & - have to do with the Rh factor. If you have it, youare +, but if you don't, you are -. Like the A, B system, ifyou're Rh-, you have Antibodies to Rh so if you get blood fromsomeone who is Rh+, you will have a immune reaction and destructionof rbc's. People who have O and Rh- (O-) blood can give bloodto anyone b/c there are no foreign antigens that will be targetedby the recepients immune system. So O- is actually theuniversal donor. So... Person with O- have no antigens on their red blood cells. Since they don't have any antigens (i.e. they aren't tolerant ofany blood Antigen), they will make antibodies to ALL the Antigentypes. So, a person with O- cannot be given any other bloodexcept O-. So the answer you can deduce will beC, there will be massive hemolysis against theforeign A antigen blood.
