Question

A student in a previous class responded to this Discussion Board assignment with the following comments: " I agree no company, whether big or small, should have to pay employees to be ineffective, but there is a new workforce out there who works harder on looking busy than really being busy or productive. I can’t count how many excessive restroom breaks with cell phones or hiding cell phones next to work stations goes on every day. I have caught people text or take phone calls during work hours, and all they can say is sorry and it was really important. These activities kill production, planning and on time delivery daily in manufacturing facilities." A classmate responded to him saying the company should have a policy "no cell phones during work hours" and have each employee check their phone in to be held except for lunch periods and employee breaks and then checked back in.

Please explain your thoughts on the policy of checking phones in and out and how you would react if your CEO implemented the same policy.

Explanation / Answer

I do not think that the idea of checking phones in and out in the work place during work hours to avoid cell phone usage would increase productivity. In my opinion this policy would only help to make the employees dissatisfied and provide the feeling that the CEO is trying to exert his bureaucratic powers over the employees. We work peacefully away from our dear ones on the belief that they can reach to us in case of emergencies any time with the help of cell phones. By taking our phones away the company would be creating a feel of insecurity and unnecessary stress on the employees. There may be some employees who waste their time on cell phones. But hardworking and committed employees will never waste their time in any manner and will be focused towards their goals. Lazy workers would not be ready to increase their productivity even if company is adopting the policy to ban phones in workplace and they will find another way to spend their time. It is not the policy, but the attitude of employees need to be changed and the same can be achieved with the help of good leadership.

If my CEO implements the strategy, as a committed employee I would follow the rules but the policy may affect my relationship with the company and I may not feel comfortable with the work environment. I feel this to be an intrusion into my basic requirements and hence would try to change the company as soon as possible.
