Question
Three pigments interact to produce flower color. If the three genes involved in the production of these pigments are unlinked, self-crossing a triple heterozygote should produce flower colors in the following ratios: 27 black to 12 red to 12 blue to 9 purple to 4 white. The results of a self-crossing experiment produced plants with 38 black flowers, 24 red flowers, 15 blue flowers, 11 purple flowers and 8 white flowers. Test the hypothesis that the observed results follow a predicted 27:12:12:9:4 ratio. Use a 5% level of significance.
Explanation / Answer
Answer
H0: Proportion is 27:!2:12:9:4
Ha: proportion is not as above
(two sided test)
O-E -2.5 6 -3 -2.5 2
Chi square 0.1543 2 0.5 0.4630 0.6667 3.784
Df = 5-1 =4
The P-Value is 0.436027.
The result is not significant at p < 0.05.
The observed result follow the expected proportions.
