Question

America started with the phrase “all men are created equal,” had a Civil War about slavery, and ratified the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments between 1865 and 1870. Yet, America’s black population did not have full civil or political rights until the 1960s.

Why were the decades of the 1950s and 1960s the decades of the biggest gains for civil rights? What happened after World War II that allowed the door to be opened for the civil rights movement? In your discussion please include civil rights milestones, people, and events. How have the goals of the civil rights movement been achieved or not achieved? How does the struggle for civil rights influence American society today?

Explanation / Answer

Non-compliance, non-violence and civil disobedience were the slogans of the civil rights movement during the 20th century which got intensified during 1950s.
The discussion about equal rights started at the end of 18th century and in 1865 the 13th amendment was passed which officially ended slavery but the Southern states refused to accept the ratification. Citizenship to African Americans was ensured by the 14th amendment and 15th amendment in 1870 allowed the back males to vote. There was a huge gap from 1870 till the end of second World War because all the nations were occupied with the war thoughts and reconstructing their economies.
Later in 1964, The Civil Rights Act was passed that ensured equality in terms of race, Colorado, sex or ethnicity. Voting Rights Act of 1965 ensured that every citizen of the country has voting rights. 1968 Fair Housing Act was passed and that allowed the Black community equal housing rights.
Different people like Martin Luther King, Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin etc played a major role in pushing the fight for equal rights and uniting the Black community on mass scale.
It's the white supremacy and ignorance that unleashed inhuman violence on other ethnic groups, especially on Black community. One generation endured the pain and torture in order for the next generation to live their rightful lives on the earth.
In my point of view, white community was not civilized till they accepted that everyone was created in the image of God and everyone is equal in the eyes of God. This happened only in the 1950s. I will not say all the White people were arrogant because few people tried to bring in changes but they couldn't.
I say this because of the violence they unleashed on the Black community for years in the USA and on other people across the globe. God was not present till 1950s in America.
