As we will also see, there are two interpretations as to how we should understand and treat globalized criminal activity:

    Crime is becoming globalized because we have globalization! All the tools, opportunities that "innocent globalization" provides us to make the world a better place can at the same time become a deadly weapon in the hands of “Criminally minded people”. These "bad people" benefit from this new realm of globalization before which we hadn't seen anything similar (e.g. Pornography on the internet; copyright infringement; human trafficking etc). So, with globalization (which is innocent in itself) bad guys find a new outlet to do harm because the global market provides a new way of making profits

    Globalization itself is responsible for crime to be globalized. In this interpretation (often goes unnoticed) globalization is not innocent: it causes damage on societies, economies, and people in general, and as a result of its structure we see the emergence of crime. In other words, in this second interpretation, globalization is not just an innocent tool that "bad people" exploits: the very workings of globalization creates problems.

With each type of global crime we will talk about in the coming lectures, you will see that the second interpretation often goes unnoticed, and scholars, journalists, law enforcement people and others always interpret global crime by focusing only on "global criminals", "bad people" who do harm using the fruits of globalization. Our task in this course, on the other hand, will be to have a balanced approach on globalization and crime. We will try to see how globalization itself can be the source of problems and crime. We will try to understand the very dynamics through which "global criminals" become global criminals, and how globalization pushes them to do the things they find themselves doing. Because of the overemphasis on the first interpretation, we see a lot of cases when justice becomes corrupt and we end up having a lot of citizens locked up in prisons.

In one of the earlier lectures, we talked about two different interpretations of Globalized Crime. Explain them briefly, and mention the strengths and weaknesses of each interpretation. Also explain how expanding our “criminological imagination" to global level helps us better understand criminal activity in the world

Explanation / Answer

The first interpretation emphasizes the use of globalisation and it's technologies by the criminals to propagate harm across the world and gain their selfish interest. This interpretation puts the full blame on the criminals who use techniques of globalisation for their crime ,thus ,it spares globalisation from having any part in the crime.

The second interpretation emphasizes on understanding the dynamics of globalisation that play a major role in creating global criminals. It suggests to understand the very nature of globalisation and how it promotes criminal activities. This interpretation also seeks for a balance of share between the criminals and globalisation than accusing the criminals who use techniques of globalisation for committing crime that are easily available and are lax.

To understand the criminal activities of the world it is important to know the various advancement of technology and it's ease of availability to the perpetrators of crime. Before releasing a new technology globally,it should be assessed fully for it's weaknesses and strengths,and to the level that it can be used by the criminals. There should more research and studies to develop such techniques in technology that will prevent the use of global technological advancement at the hands of perpetrators of crimes. For this it's important that everybody, every nation put there sincere effort and abides by sincerity in doing so.
