Question

An important phenomenon of self is self-serving bias. We usually think about ourselves favorably; and therefore tend to accept the credit when things go our way and place credit on others when things do not go our way. Self-presentation is another interesting theory. It emphasizes how an individual modifies his or her mannerism, behavior, appearance, and attitude to create a favorable impression on others. As you have learned, self-presentation varies depending on the culture, but what about the online environment? Online learning, shopping, and personal home Web pages are just a few areas where an individual's presence is viewed.

Compare and contrast self-serving bias and locus of control? Provide an example of a situation in which you encountered an individual (no names) engaged in self-serving bias.

Explain how would the theory of self-presentation fit in an online (basically global) environment.

Explain your views of the effects of culture on self-presentation and if that effect is diminished in an online environment.

Explanation / Answer

Self-Serving Bias is a concept where an individual credits success to oneself and blames others for failures. It has happened many a time where one of my supervisors at work used to take all the credit but blame us when something goes wrong in front of the superiors.

Locus of control means the center of control. If one has internal locus of control, they believe that they could control and influence the happenings and their outcomes but people with external locus of control blames others for everything. Whenever I face a tough situation, I make sure to take control of the situation by motivating myself and winning people by talking to them without blaming them.

Self-Presentation is presenting oneself with an aim to impress the others. So the presenter exhibits some behaviors and attitudes that would influence the onlookers, audience or viewers if it is online. It’s also otherwise called impression management. More people go online creating their blogs, creating pages in social networking sites or creating videos and post them on the net. Many people do that to let other people know that these things exist in the world. If we check the number of people writing blogs and posting their comments, it’s on the rise. Even small children’s videos exhibiting their talents are posted on the web in order to impress others and get more likes, thus to feel better.

This blogs, facebook posts and posting of video depends on one’s culture because if it doesn’t comply, the person may be in a deep trouble and may be expelled from the culture. If the blogs or videos offend any culture for that matter, they will face condemnation instead of impressing others. So cultural sensitivity in self-presentation is really a significant aspect people need to consider when they do this, especially online as millions of people will be viewing that and it might spoil the name of the entire culture.
