Question

An important aspect of report writing is correctly analyzing and interpreting data. The most realistic conclusions and most feasible recommendations result from efficient data analysis and interpretation. Read the case and follow the instructions.

Case:

A business communication class at Northland University was asked by the campus bookstore manager, Patrick Sykes, to conduct a survey. Concerned about the environment, Mr. Sykes wants to learn students’ reactions to eliminating the use of plastic bags, the bookstore gives away 35,000 annually. Students answered questions about four different proposals, resulting in the data below. Based on the data provided, do the following:

Given the conditions of the survey, name at least three conclusions that could be drawn from the data. Explain each of your conclusions and how you came to them.

Prepare two recommendations, based on your conclusions, to be submitted to Mr. Sykes to implement at the bookstore.

After your initial post, respond to one of your classmates by making one additional recommendation based on one of their conclusions.

For major purchases, students think the bookstore should: Agree Undecided Disagree Continue to provide plastic bags 132 17 411 Provide no bags at all and encourage students to bring their own bags 414 25 121 Provide no plastic bags but offer cloth bags at a reduced price (about $3) 357 19 184 Give cloth bags with each major purchase, the cost to be included in student registration fees 63 15 482

Explanation / Answer

Conclusions:

1. Most students disagree with continuing plastics. Mr. Sykes survey clearly gives the idea that most students say do not continue with plastics. 411 students disagree with this propasal.

2. Out of all the four options most students are in favour of provide no plastic bags at all and encourage students to bring their own bags. most students, 414 students agree with no plastics at all and bringing own bags.

3. Next option which the most students are in favour of is provide no plastic bags but offer cloth bags at a reduced price (about $3). 357 students agree to using cloth and charging a fee for it.

4. Students are definitely not in favour of providing cloth bags and including the cost in registration fees. Probably most students do not make a lot purchases hence they feel including them in student registration would be unfair. 482 students disagree here.

Recommendation:

1. Provide no plastic bags, and encourage students to bring their own bags. Because most students are in favour of this option there would be limited dissent between the students when this option is implemented. It would also save a lot of costs on Mr. Sykes side by cutting down cost for plastic bags which amount to 35000 annually.

2. provide cloth bags instead, and charge a fee for it. Definitely not include the cost of bags in student registration fees, students are against it. This option of providing cloth bags have lesser number of supporters but it is still received well. Mr. sykes could look into this option and charge the additional cost from students who are seeking a bag.
