Explanation / Answer

Morozov (2012) has reported that 40 percent students at the San Diego State University opined that being self-promoting, narcissistic, overconfident, and attention-seeking is helpful for succeeding in a competitive world. Taking this view forward, I would be interested in analyzing if social media use is associated with certain pathological personality characteristics, particularly narcissism. My research question is thus: Is increasing social media use among adolescents related to narcissistic traits?

The study would the correlational one, with the independent variable being (IV) social media use and the dependent variable (DV) being narcissism. To measure the IV, a set of questions relating to how much time adolescents spend on social media can be used, based on which they can be classified into different groups based on the frequency of use. In case of the DV, the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, a self-report questionnaire can be utilized in order to obtain a score that indicates the relative strength of narcissistic traits among the participants.

Some of the ethical considerations that need to be taken into account relate to maintaining privacy with respect to the participant's data (as narcissistic scores may not be perceived very positively by all) and eliminating bias during data collection. The pattern of data I expect to see, based on the prevailing literature is that increased social media use would be strongly related to narcissistic traits.
