In carrying out the "Stanford County Prison" study in the 1970s, Philip Zimbardo and his researchers chose to do an experiment because they were interested in testing a hypothesis. After reading about this experiment, what was Zimbardo's conclusion about the prison setting itself and the cause of prison violence. What was Zimbardo's conclusion about the prison setting itself and the cause of prison violence.

Zimbardo’s conclusion was that people would confer to their social roles that they are expected to be in and these roles would further be ascertained with the stereotypes attached to these roles. It was observed that onone of the guards who were outside the prison environment, I.e. before being guards, would not engage into sadistic behaviours. It is the prison behaviour that makes people engage in such activities. He concluded that “prison” was the factor that led to such brutality. This finding goes with the fact that behavior is situational and not dispositional.

Do you agree with Zimbardo's conclusions and if so, why, and if no, why not?

I do agree with Zimbardo’s conclusion. This goes in handing with the nature vs nurture theory, where it is proposed that the behaviour of a person changes with the environment in which they have been brought up. He explains that this behaviour is because of the state in whicha person becomes involved in the norms that they are surrounded with and in this behavior they get engaged with the group identity so as to identify themselves as people of the in group. Their identity becomes in sync with the identity of the peers, thus losing their sense of identity and responsibility. They lose their sense of identity as a result of the uniform that they wear.
