Bell Herring is a Atlanta based psychotherapist and sex addiction expert . Having gone through the ethical dilemma and issues related to it in his own career and having observed others he developed, set of Core Ethical guidelines for treatment of addiction . These guidelines show direction to the psychotherapist and answer several issues faced by them . These were first published in "Counselor: The Magazine for Addiction Professionals", March/April 2002.
These ethical codes along with other several codes provide a reference guide to the practitioners while facing dilemma , during the treatment . These are also an assurance to the subject that they are dealt with ethically and on a standard protocol maintained by all psychotherapists. . A set of common principles derived from these various codes must be sufficiently broad enough to take into account the rich variety of practice settings, counseling theories and treatment approaches in which addiction counselors operate.
These guidelines have been divided into six broad categories without any specific context and should be used generally by the counselors. These guidelines are as follows :-
1.Informed consent : this is the backbone of all psychological treatment . Setting up the trust between patient and counselor is important as the treatment progresses , there is a continuous need of informed consent since the counselor dwells on several issues which are sequentially related to one another . At each step consent should be sought from the patient so as patient does not fell insecure at any point in treatment . The type of therapy used like family therapy, group therapy etc and its demand should be discussed in advance .
2. Competence and established theory: A counselor should only practice treatments she is educated , experienced , practice and certified in . Just because she feels that x treatment is better on a gut feeling , she should not use . Each therapy should be scientifically established and justified in the cases used .
3.Confidentiality: Guarding sensitive information of the patients’ is a key responsibility of the counselors . In no circumstances without any justification and compromising on the basis right secret and sensitive information of the patient should be shared with anyone .
4.Duty to warn or protect : the counselor also has a responsibility to take in loop appropriate persons who may be inflicted harm because of patients behavior . Addiction of alcohol and driving is one such instance when the local police should be informed about the subjects possibility of drunken driving.
.Minors and families : it’s a counselors duty to see that the children and families are protected from any potential risk due to patients addictive behavior . Its counselors duty to establish communication and take steps to protect this vulnerable lot. While treating minors what information will be shared with the parents should be set in advance as minor may not open up to everything if confidentiality boundaries with parents are not set .
5.Utilize adequate consultation The counselor may also take support of other practitioner whenever required .
6. Honor diverse values : Counselor should respect cultural values of the clients and should try to treat while protecting and respecting these values . This is an important part of protecting psychological make up of the patients and leading them to a normal life.
