(Answer) (1) How did Rome achieve its empire from 264 to 133 B.C.E., and what is meant by the phrase ‘‘Roman imperialism’’?

As soon as the Romans began to conquer territories, they and the Latins began to be settlers. They build roads and other amenities they would require, which soon made the area their own. They also had a good military and hence were able to progress to be rulers of these lands. Rome controlled a large majority of Europe at that time. They did it thought imperialism. This meant that they expanded their land either through force or politics. Their aim was to get people to submit to them and succumb to their rule. This is Roman Imperialism.

(2) What values did Livy emphasize in his account of Cincinnatus? How important were those values to Rome’s success? Why did Livy say he wrote his history? As a writer during the Augustan Age (see Chapter 6), would he have pleased or displeased Augustus by writing a history with such a purpose?

A peculiar trait in a Roman leader would be apathy to a certain greed for power. This is what made Cincinnatus atypical as a leader. He came to power in a state of emergency so to say, exercised his absolute power, solved the problem and could have bent the rules in his own favour to stay powerful. However, Cincinnatus was not power hungry like his fellow rulers. He went on to be a farmer soon after he finished his job.

(3) Why was George Washington called the "American Cincinnatus"? Briefly discuss how likely it is today that a major politician would willingly give up power to return to a private, simple life.

Similar to Cincinnatus, Washington was politically powerful until the imperialists were overthrown and then returned to a life on the farm. Washington too had the chance to be a man of great political power. However, he made a different choice and adopted the simple life as soon as the issue at hand was solved.

One cannot make a general statement about all leaders today. It is a very subjective concept because it would depend on the psychology and choices of the individual in question. There can be individuals who crave power and there are individuals like Cincinnatus. However, to make sure that the prior is easily controlled, a democracy would not allow for an individual to exceed their term.
