What role should religion play in government? As you develop your argument, think about the following questions: What do supporters of religion in government (accommodationists) value? How do they view the world? What about those who believe in the separation of church and state (separationists)? Why do they disagree so strongly with the accommodationists? Why might separationists who also happen to be religious believe in the separation of church and state? How can we rectify the fact that America is a religious nation, but one in which religion plays a limited role in government? Do we need to?

Explanation / Answer

Religion shouldn't play any role in the government as religion stands first in dividing the world into different parts. Most of the wars during the medieval period and terrorism today have their roots in religion. Religion has a very stereotypical view on other people. So, in a state where people of all religions live in peace and harmony, religions will cause only pain and discrimination.
Accommodationists support the idea that everyone in the country has the right to follow whatever religion they wish to follow. This they advocate believing that religion keep the morale of people thus reducing conflicts among them because religious people are God fearing and respect others. They also propose that the government should great everyone from any religion equally.
Separationists suggest that religion and state should not be mixed because a state works for the well being of everyone in the state whereas a religious government may work more for the religion they propogate and look down on people from other people. Separatists view that if religion is embedded in the state, there will be chaos and confusion.
Separationists are also religious people but they suggest that let the religion be very personal and the state be for everyone.
America is a religious country because the national slogan 'In God We Trust' is the cornerstone of American society. So, when they brought slaves from other countries, their immediate task was to convert people to Christianity without following Christian values but now the scenario is changing rapidly that people are becoming less religious and the government is becoming more humanistic.
