Question

General utilitarianism, Individual Relativism, Kantian ethics, Ethical relativism, Act utilitarianism, Preference Utilitarianism, Rule utilitarianism, Truth Ethics, Custom Ethics, Virtue Ethics

Match the ethical theory with the duty to tell the truth:

An ethical theory holds that we should always tell the truth.

An ethical theory holds that society determines if we have a duty to tell the truth.

The consequences determine if we have a duty to tell the truth. If the consequences are good, we should tell the truth. If not, we should not tell the truth.

If society benefits from our having a duty to tell the truth, we should always tell the truth, even if it is sometimes counter-productive.

To find out if we have a duty to tell the truth an ethical theory holds that we should ask the question: What would happen if everybody else considered not to tell the truth?

Explanation / Answer

Lying is a form of deception. Many people think that lying is always wrong, except for when there is a good reason behind not telling the truth. So if hiding the truth produces a better result than telling it, then hiding it would be a good reason. People think hiding the truth and making others smile is better than saying the truth and making them cry and hurting them emotionally.

We should tell truth most of times, but if we are scared that it might cause harm to the other person then it is better to hide the truth
