" The “Letter from Birmingham Jail” was written by Martin Luther King in 1963 when he was in jail for protesting segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. He decided to write this open letter mainly as a response to the white clergymen and his fellow activists when they disagreed with his methods and procedures against the segregation laws and who criticized his work during the protest in Birmingham. He also wrote this letter to persuade white moderates to support non-violent direct action. His message shows that he was able to explain and reply to the white religious leader statements. The letter demand was to break the laws which were unfair to the people and considered as legal. Dr. King used different types of rhetorical strategies in his letter that helped him to develop his arguments and claims effectively and efficiently. The American activist attempt to convince his audiences through the use of logos, pathos, and ethos paired or combined with his friendly tone, style, and word choices."
