What should families, police officers, investigators, and other adults do (or not do) when a child has possibly been the eyewitness to a crime? How can they preserve the integrity of the child’s memory about that event while (at the same time) also helping the child cope physically and emotionally with the experience? You will want to (re)read the subsection in this chapter of the text entitled, "Children’s Eyewitness Recall" and maybe a little internet research before answering, familiarize yourself with the topic and give you some ideas.

A child's eyewitness memory is basically the person's episodic memory for a crime or something dramatic event he is witnessed as a child. On the whole, it has a negative effect, but this can be quite variable depending on the level of stress and the aspect of the witnessed event that one is trying to remember.

People often assume that a high level of emotion,positive or negative, will facilitate memory; however,it is also possible that intense emotion,specially the high level of stress associated with witnessing a crime,would lead to decrements in memory for details of the crime itself and for the ability to recognize the persons involved.So being witnessed for a crime is such a traumatic event for the child.Families,police officers, investigators, and other adults should -
