Critique / respond to this persons post on - The relationship between stress and health and the importance of learning positive measures to ensure our physical and mental well-being. Explain how “a stressor is a condition or event that challenges or threatens a person” also discuss stressful events reduce the body’s natural defenses against disease” in some writings what do you think. Finally what is the importance of knowing good coping skills and setting boundaries for ourselves where our obligations are concerned?

Over the past three weeks I think that I have learned more about myself than I would have ever known had I not taken this class. The two major stressors in my life are money and security "frusturation". I always like to have a plan for everything and my biggest mental issue is the just in case money. I put more money in there than my savings yet it never seems to be enough because I always think of another what if scenario. Security wise I am a very observant person sometimes too observant. I do not put a lot of trust in anything these days considering the way life is evolving and happening on the news. "Emotion-focused coping relies on managing or controlling one’s emotional reaction to a stressful or threatening situation." I simply must find better ways to cope with these two issues. After taking this course I find that I do talk a bit more about my issues and whats been going through my mind to my wife and I do in fact feel somewhat better afterwards so that is a small step for me. Doing so shall make me more productive because I am able to better identify what some of these feelings and emotions are to handle accordingly versus just brushing it off. I also do see a connection of the three since when one is not doing well it some how ends up affecting the other two.

Explanation / Answer

While it is true that an emotion-focused approach can be helpful in coping with stressful stimuli, I believe that a problem-focused approach is ensures better coping outcomes. For instance, if one is experiencing stress due to monetary worries, one can tackle the very issue at hand by balancing one’s expenditure and one’s savings in an optimal fashion. If one is able to formulate an effective way to solve any possible monetary problems, it reduces the source of stress to a large degree by minimising the source of stress in the first place. Emotion-focused approaches are always beneficial as well, however, a problem-focused approach would ensure that the event causing stress ceases to be, as long as the problem is more or less under one’s control
