Problem focused coping is the coping mechanism in which the individual would target the stress causing stimuli and look at it from a practical perspective. The individual would focus on tackling the different situations of life by looking at them from a practical point of view. This practical approach to a problem yields direct problem solving or direct removal of stress. The stressor and its main cause would be determined and strategies would be inclined towards eliminating those problems.
Emotion focused coping is when the person would attempt to reduction of the negative emotions which are building up in response to stressors. The emotion focused coping mechanism is another stress management strategy which targets negative emotions such as aggression, anxiety, depression, or even humiliation. The individual attempts to eliminate these negative emotions as a method of coping and stress management.
I believe both the mechanisms are useful. This is because, only when a person would be able to control their negative emotions, they would be able to think clearly removing all the cognitive biases. Only when a person is clear of the negative thoughts interfering with the critical thinking processes, they would be able to devise solutions for the problem at hand, unless there is a balance between both the strategies, problems cannot be solved efficiently.
