Question

Consider something we all do but very rarely do well: listening. It's necessary in every facet of life: we spend about 60% of our time doing it. Mindful listening is difficult, but it is a skill you can learn and improve upon.

I'd like you to observe yourself as you go through your day. What styles of effective and ineffective listening did you use today and under what circumstances? What does this inventory of listening styles say about your personality and motives? Which styles did you use most often? Do you see a need to change those styles now that you're more aware of their use?

Explanation / Answer

I basically used a comprehension effective style of listening wherein I was trying to actively understand the project at my workplace and my responsibilities. I was watching as well as listening to the presentation in order to comprehend as much information as possible to have a clear understanding. Ineffective listening I did with my colleague who was bragging about her shopping and vacation and I was just thinking about my plan for tomorrow and what all I need to do. I was trying to maintain an eye contact so that she didnt understand that I wasnt listening to her. I ama good listener but it actually depends upon my mood also. I dont like people bragging and being fake and showing off thats why I dont prefer to listen to them. Anything worthy of my interest or even something meaningful is what attracts me to listen to someone. I like engaging conversations wherein the person is talking very interestingly and intelligently and I just listen. I talk less since I am an introvert which kind of makes me a good listener. I dont think I need to change my listening styles since I do get good feedback from people that I do listen actively.
