Question
Chapter 10 Put It in Writing Activity:
What is stress like for you? To help you understand the role of stress in your life, write a page describing a stressful incident that you had to face in the recent past. Identify what the stressors were and classify each of them as physical or psychological. List your physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to these stressors, noting how long the responses lasted. Include a brief summary of how you coped with these stressors and how successful your coping efforts were. Some research suggests that writing about stressful experiences can help people deal with those experiences. Did this writing project have any such benefits for you?
Explanation / Answer
What is stress like for you?
Stress, for me, is something that largely affects me. For most people, stress doesn’t cause many issues, but I have realised that I do get largely affected with stress. It climbs on my head, I start getting agitated, short tempered and losing all my calm. It starts to feel that I have no way out, and getting mad is the only way out. What people say is thinking or working best under pressure, does not apply to me. I work worst under pressure. In fact, I’m one of the kind of people who likes to complete their work in parts , but by bit, so that under pressure it wouldn’t be really climbing up on my head.
One such situations were in my office. I’m used to complete my work well before time, such that I would plan, organise my work, and finish it bit by bit, without the pressure building up. But last week, I had already received an assignment and had a surprise family trip at the same time, which took up two of my days. As a result, my work was delayed by 2 days. The habit of dividing work equally , added extra burden to the other days, which kept me being frustrated for the time I didn’t complete it.
Work pressure: psychological stressor
Emotional stressors: in the form of agitation and irritation and becoming short tempered.
My coping efforts were not very successful. I tried to not shout or yell at people if they would disturb me frequently, but that didn’t work very well. All that was present in my mind was the assignment and it’s completion date. Being a workaholic and a petite person, not being able to finish my work on time and any lapses would always hype me up. In order to cope up, mostly, I revert to black coffee.
