Chapter 13: Put It in Writing Activity:
• Imagine that you have decided to get help for depression, anxiety, or some other psychological problem.
Using what you have learned in this chapter (Essentials of Psychology 6e Douglas A.Bernstein) , write a page
o describing what approach to treatment you would prefer and why.
o Tell whether you would choose that approach for all kinds of problems or whether your choice would depend on the nature of the problem.
o Finally, list the characteristics of your ideal therapist and say why you think those characteristics might lead to successful treatment.
Explanation / Answer
In my humble opinion, the best form of treatment and the best results that i have seen in context of the aforementioned disorder is REBT. This therapy stems from CBT and is called Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. It helps break the irrational and self deprecatory internal monologue that most people in depression inculcate which goes onto affect their mental well being.
My choice of therapy would most definitely be dependent upon the nature of the problem and the context of the problem as many such disorders also require the psychodynamic approach.
My ideal therapist would be something as Carl Rogers had penned down, one who is an active listener but a passive participant, as he was of the belief that an individual who seek counseling knows the inherent conundrum and can circumvent the problem by an ever so slight nudge.
