Question

In the article it defines short term memory, or WMC as kept even though distractions or an interference may happen at the same time. This is important for cognitive abilities like reasoning, comprehension, and problem solving. In the textbook it defines short term memory as the awareness and recall of items that will not be available to the person as soon as he or she stops rehearsing it. My definition of short term memory is the ability of a person to hold a small amount of information in mind available for a short periocd of time, but is forgotten when it is not thought about. Some things short term memory is good for include names, numbers, and small phrases. Some ways to strengthen short term memory include getting an ample amount of sleep every night, exercising, and avoiding stress in everyday life. In the article it says that athletes who play a sport that requires a significant working memory load (like football and volleyball) would score higher on the AOSPAN memory test. I can only agree to this statement to a small extent. I believe that athletes who participate in non-athletes would score have a higher score than those who play full contact sports. I believe this because athletes who play low-contact sports are at lower risks for concussions. A concussion is a traumatic blow to the head that affects your brain function; athletes who have a concussion experience symptoms including balance problems, headaches, and memory issues. That is why I believe that athletes who play in low/non contact sports will score better than athletes who play a full- contact sport the general "executive attention" making sure that memory is

Explanation / Answer

I agree with the proposed definition of the short term memory as a limited information storage system. As for the techniques of improving short term memory, I believe that practising mindfulness or being highly aware of the present moment would also facilitate the recall of items. However, I disagree that low contact sports would score between on the AOSPAN test. Presumably, players of high contact sports need to be aware of not just their own positions in the sport but also that of their team members and competitors. This would require a good short term memory capacity.
