RI ,154% 5:30 PM ^ Shared Writing: Ethical and Soci... 20 pts In a letter to the editor in a newspaper, the writer stated that "People over 96 years old should not be driving anymore. They should not be given a driver's license after that age." Explain why you either agree or disagree with this statement. Think about what you have learned about the aging process, sensory changes, changes in reaction times, and changes in memory/ cognition when answering. Also consider the potential for ageism in the views of elderly drivers. What role should psychologists who focus on late adulthood play in the drafting and implementation of laws concerning aging drivers? 40 characters are required to post and earn points. Explanation / Answer

“People over 96 years of age should not be given a driver’s license”.

Though, the older people might be missing the time when they used to drive, in order to maintain safety of the public as well as keeping individual mobility in mind, this should not be allowed. This is because, at older ages, there occur decline of the driving abilities. There are different parts of the brain that assist a person in driving. There is a part that would be receiving the sensory data, with another area anticipating the scenarios, while one part carries out Movement synchronisation and one part would analyse The options.

When all these functions work together, it helps the driver in assessing of a bump or provides them with the ability to manage the car at the time of a skid. The temporal life of the brain would be decoding the auditory signals analysing the variations in them. Frontal lobes allow with laying attention and in prioritisation of optical signals. When ageing occurs, there are changes in the brain, with a shrinking of the frontal cortex. While driving, there is requirement of bilateral processing of memory. This ability of bilateral memory processing is diminished in the older days. Also, there is recruitment of memory. The grey matter shrinking occurs as a result of cell death.

Psychologists could help in making laws by allowing for testing of the individuals and their abilities, making tests more extensive, so as to provide license to the elderly.nthis is because there are some of the older people who tend to maintain their physiological states and don’t grow frail. As a result, granting license should be on the basis of abilities.
