For each situation below identify the actor that is most pertinent to the EFFECTIVENSS OF PUNISHMENT. For each factor, describe how the factor can help to make punishment more effective. I will be looking for your ability to name the factor correctly and your ability understand how the factor influence the effectiveness of punishment. A) The employee handbook states that a verbal reprimand will be given for the first instance of showing up more than 20 minutes late for work. The second instance will result in loss of a day's wages. The third instance will result in termination. B) The school shall notify a student of days within a four-week period parent/guardian through register mail f a student has been absent from school, without excuse, on three days or part C) Recent distracted driving laws are intended to restrict the use of cell phones in school zones. Violators will be issued a $400 ticket. However due to buedget reductions, only ten police cruisers will be available during drop off and pick -up times to monitor activity at the 41 elementary schools throughout the city D) Johnny, who lives in a home with two busy parents, is rather active like most other children. If he is quietly playing in his room, the parents are likely to ignore him and engage in activities of their own. By contrast, if Joh nny behaves badly or makes demands, the parents are forced to pay attention to him

Explanation / Answer

A) Employee late coming- Due to the consistency and the timeliness of the punishment, it becomes effective and can reduce undesired behaviour.

B)Absence in school- This does not seem to be an effective punishment, as there is less severity and does not promote desired behaviour.

C) Traffic rules violation- Again, the consistency is lacking and people would quickly find loopholes to escape the punishment.

D) Johnny's behaviour-This is negative reinforcement. Johnny learns that, he would be paid attention only when he throws tantrums. This is a conditional learning.
