Discuss the biological, chemical and psychological conditioning methods available to deal with an unwanted addiction or to help a substance abuser. Include the fact that most efforts fail, and your reasoning for why the method fails the addict as opposed to the addict failing to cease to be addicted (including smokers and drinkers).Explanation / Answer
Biological approach- It tries to correct the underlying cause for addiction and it is believed that a damaged brain causes addiction. The brain makes the drug appear rewarding and hence counter chemicals are given. However very less is known about why the drug is effective or not.
Chemical method- Medication can be given to manage withdrawal symptoms while detoxifying their body. However consistency and quick access to the medicines are required otherwise the person may resume to old practice. Sometimes, medicine has to given for a relatively long period of time.
Physical method- Counseling and skills training; Community or family based recovery support systems seem to help to an extent. Follow up care is essential.
In my opinion, as the addiction causes many irreversible effects any method approached to treat it, can only work up to an extent. Also, there is no known method that will firmly help at any stage of addiction. Moreover, I feel that a mix of all the methods can be more effective rather than relying on one method for treatment.
