Now that you have completed your readings, your task is to assess the impact of sexually explicit materials on human sexual behavior. You will need to analyze the following questions, presenting a 2-4 paragraph response for each question:
1. There is generally less violence in sexually oriented material than in mainstream movies and TV crime shows. Why are censorship efforts directed more toward sexually explicit nonviolent material than toward nonsexual violent material?
2. Research has found 82% of students viewing sexually explicit material online were sexually aroused, yet 57% of them also said that viewing the material was disturbing. How do you reconcile something that feels good and is also disturbing?
3. Do you believe that pornography incites sexual violence? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
The main reason censorship is less directed towards nonsexual violent material is because violence is more socially acceptable. Sexual exploitations are still very taboo in society. While people are more open to sexual material, it is not something they want portrayed publicly. The rise is romance and erotic novels is steadily inclining, which in my opinion shows that society is more accepting of sexual behavior, however they do not want it displayed on television. Parents obviously do not want their children to watch sexual acts being portrayed on television. In a way sex has become everyone’s dirty secret, but just as secrets are meant to stay hidden, so does the portrayal of sexual material stays hidden in mainstream media. Violence on the other hand has not only become acceptable socially, it has also risen in its media portrayal. In the media, violence has become glorified. Being the tough guy/girl is something everyone wants to be. Action movies are on the rise, and people are more interested in seeing a graphic violent material. People who watch pornography whether violent or not do not necessarily indulge in violence. Whilst on the contrary those that engage in violent acts do not necessarily make the conviction to do so after watching sexually violent pornography. Sexually violent pornographic contents are not a necessary or sufficient influence to sexual violence according to Robert Jensen’s 2004 findings. He suggests the important question is whether particular pornographic content contributes to sexual violence. The key word here being contributes.There is no proven connection porn and sexual violence.
