Cognitive Psychology is essentially the psychology of thinking or mental processes. As the Greek philosophers asked, “how do we know what we know, and why do we behave as we do?” Cognitive psychologists are answering some aspects of these questions, and cognitive neuroscientists in particular, are observing the process.

George Miller led the Cognitive Revolution. In modern times, most of us think of cognitive psych as rather mundane, standard, and well-accepted. Nothing too controversial about it. But that was not so in the mid-1900s when Miller led the revolution. What was this revolution all about? Why Did Miller feel so strongly about leading it and why was it necessary? What was the opposition? How do you see this playing out today in the field of psychology as a whole?

And secondly, neuroscience has been a huge revolution of the modern age, vastly changing the face of psychological science, with its big start happening just before the turn of the century/millennium. I feel like the book doesn't go into it in nearly enough detail, but I'd love for us to share what we know from other classes/the Internet. What do we know now that we could never have known about the human brain and thought processes before we put them through "scanners"?

By the 1950s, new disciplinary perspectives in linguistics, neuroscience, and computer science were emerging, and these areas revived interest in the mind as a focus of scientific inquiry. This particular perspective has come to be known as the cognitive revolution (Miller, 2003). Miller, together with Jerome Bruner and Noam Chomsky, led the “cognitive revolution” that replaced behaviorism as the leading psychological approach to understanding the mind in the 1950s.George believed that the human mind in all its aspects was interesting and worth studying — believe it or not, that was revolutionary at the time and thats why he felt the need to lead this revolution. Miller helped to find the fields of cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, and cognitive neuroscience; The magical number seven plus or minus two; capacity limitations in cognitive processing; chunking; bringing the mathematical theory of information and communication into psychology; bringing Chomsky’s theory of generative grammar into psychology; the Wordnet database. Miller recognized the relevance of information theory for psychology. - He studied the difficulty hearing spoken messages while sitting in loud airplanes at Harvard and gave the magic number seven plus or minus two. Many fields today have benefited from cognitive psychology. It can help in business to increase it sales, help employees to work at it peak, helping teachers to benefit by learning about how people process, absorb, learn and remember information. and helping patients suffering from Alzheimer's to remember memories that were precious to them. It can also assist in learning to help students with learning disorders to perform better in school and lastly to assist the authorities such as the police to assist in investigations. As cognitive psychology touches on many others disciplines, this branch of psychology is therefore studied by numerous people in different fields. Neuroscience research has made its greatest contributions to the study of cognitive development by illuminating mechanisms (providing a “how”) that underlie behavioral observations made earlier by psychologists.Neuroscience has demonstrated promise for detecting cognitive problems before they are behaviorally observable—and, hence, promise for early intervention. In other words, rather than showing that biology is destiny, neuroscience research has been at the forefront of demonstrating the powerful role of experience throughout life.
