Question

A 3-year old child enrolled in your class has moderate to severe asthma. His parents are divorced, and they disagree on the management of the child’s asthma in the classroom. The boy’s mother wants to use the conventional medical treatment, but the father wants to use homeopathic treatments. You get different instructions about what to do depending on who drops the child off at preschool.

What are the issues here, and how can the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and your state’s program licensing requirements help you determine what to do?

How do you think it is best to communicate with the family?

Explanation / Answer

The family must be explained that fighting over the child's health issues is not appropriate as the child must recieve the treatment which provides immediate relief.in divorce families it is very common to see children as the victims of such parental arguments and decisions.it is the child which is put through a series of events and problems.in certain situations arguments are not called for and they should focus mainly on the child not their ego state as to who will win the argument or have a control over decision making. When the child is at school the teacher can take a decision as to what is best for the child for immediate relief and they have the authority to exercise it in the school premises.
