Question

Justin is one of the popular boys in eighth grade. He likes attention and enjoys having the younger kids look up to him. He especially likes the reputation of being the leader of the group of guys he hangs out with. One morning two girls in Ms. Armstrong's homeroom reported to her that Justin tweeted lies about them to the other students in class. He made sexually explicit claims about his relationship with them. Explain how Ms. Armstrong might deal with the victims and with Justin and how she might effectively approach the topic with the class

Explanation / Answer

Ms. Armstrong could call the boy individually and confirm whether he has done it. Then she could explain to him that doing so will affect his reputation in the school and it would also mar the relationship he has with the other students because they might avoid him out of fear of him doing the same to them. She could also tell him, it’s ok if he had done it because it may be due to some reason which they could work it out. She could then call the girls to check whether anything else happened between them. If so, she could call the boy and the girls together and settle things down among them thus reestablishing their relationship. She could link this topic without mentioning anything that happened by stating that people need emotional intelligence and lack of emotional intelligence will force them to act in an immature and illogical way thus ending up in a problem. These actions will not only end the person in trouble but it would also mar their relationship with others, mar the reputation of the victims and cause them lots of stress. So, controlling one’s emotions will help one control one’s behaviors thus making them more rational in doing things.
