Question

Return to the article that you previously read entitled “Social Competence and Psychological Vulnerability as Predictors of Facebook Addiction” by Satici, Saricali, Satici, and Eraslan Capan (2014). 2. Submit a word document with a full article review. An article review shows that you can read a psychological article and interpret its strengths and weaknesses. You must show that you are familiar with research designs, can interpret data, and evaluate the article. You should use full sentences with correct English spelling and grammar. A good article review should have the following qualities: 1. Part A: Summary Summarize the article in your own words. Be sure to describe the research design and give the pertinent and important information. 2. Part B: Reaction Include your scientific observations about the article. Be sure to include all of the following: • If an experimental design, identify the independent variable, dependent variable, experimental group, and control group • If a correlational design, was there a positive, negative, or zerocorrelation? • Was the participant sample of adequate size, composition, etc.? Could the authors reasonably generalize their findings to a broader population, given the sample? • Any bias (researcher or participant)? • Was this an ethical study based on APA standards? Why/why not? • Major strengths of the article/research design • Major weaknesses of the article/research design • Overall, was this a sound (strong) study and why? • How could this experiment/study have been improved? What further studies could come fromit? 3. Part C: Your Voice This is an informal paragraph explaining any problems you may have encountered with the assignment, and sharing something that you learned from it. You may also include any explanations that you think I need regarding your work. There is no required page-length or word count for this assignment. You may write as much or as little as you need to fully and accurately meet the criteria for a good article review outlined above. The rubrics that follow will be used to grade your article review.

Explanation / Answer

Let us discuss each part in detail by answering the sub-parts in the question,

SOCIAL COMPETENCE AND
PSYCHOLOGICALVULNERABILITY AS
PREDICTORS OF FACEBOOK ADDICTION

Part A :
*Summary of the research design:

The Study’s aim was to investigate the relationship between social competence and psychological vulnerability and Facebook addiction of Turkish university students. The study’s sample was carried out with 248 (139 women, 109 men, with their Mean age being 21.5 years.) .Students from the turkish university were the participants who completed the Turkish version of the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale, the Psychological Vulnerability Scale, and the Perceived Social Competence Scale. The research data was then analyzed by correlation and multiple regression analysis.
The sampling design was conducted based on the simple random sampling methods. The participants were distributed into four groups. There were 52 (21%) first-year students, 86 (35%) were second-year students, with 59 (24%) being third-year students, and finally 51 (21%) were fourth-year students. The average time spent on the Internet on a weekday that was reported by the students to be 155 minutes respectively. The analysis of the data was carried out using Pearson’s correlation and stepwise regression method analysis. Correlational research design was used in the current study with cross-sectional sample. Before carrying out the analysis, normality, homogeneity, Mahalanobis distance values, singularity, tolerance, VIF, and Durbin-Watson hypothesis were controlled. An alpha coefficient of .05 was used for all statistical tests. The analyses were applied via SPSS 15 for windows. The researchers hypothesized that social competence will be associated negatively with Facebook addiction and psychological vulnerability will be associated positively with Facebook addiction.

Part B :

*Scientific observations from the following study can be noted as follows:

From the statistics, it was inferred that in the sample, Facebook addiction level was relatively low according to the mean scores (M = 30.71) but social competence level was relatively high (M = 25.09) . The results indicate, that the facebook addiction is significantly negatively correlated with social competence, with the value of coeffecient being, r = -.39, 95% and significantly positively correlated with psychological vulnerability, with the coffecient value being, r = .41,95% .
Social competence and psychological vulnerability were also used in a stepwise multiple regression analysis to predict Facebook addiction. According to the results of multiple regression analysis, the model was statistically significant, F(1, 216) =38.871, p < .001, and accounted for approximately 27% of the variance of Facebook addiction (R2 = .266, Adjusted R2 = .259).
Psychological vulnerability entered the equation first, it ranked first and was accounting for 17% of the variance in predicting Facebook addiction. Then, it was followed by social competence which entered on the second step, accounting for an additional 10% of variance. The standardized beta coefficients in the last model indicated that psychological vulnerability (p < .001) and social competence (p <.001) significantly predicted Facebook addiction. Psychological vulnerability received the strongest weight in the given model which was followed by social competence.
In conclusion, in terms of understanding the nature of Facebook addiction, social competence, which affects feedback of others, and psychological vulnerability, which is closely related to affirmation by others. In addition to these, social competence and psychological vulnerability, were found to be negative predictors of Facebook addiction, in check with previous investigations and researches.

*Correlation results :

Facebook addiction was found to be in a positive correlation with psychological vulnerability and in a negative correlation with social competence. The findings hence, indicated that the psychological vulnerability and social competence were significant predictors of Facebook addiction

*Generalizability:

In terms of generalizability of this study, the sample was very limited

*Bias (participant) :

All data were based on the students’ self-report responses. Using multiple methods, such as a mix method research design, may be useful in decreasing the “subjectivity” limitation of the findings and enhancing the validity of the results.

*Was this an Ethical study based on APA standards? :

For a research study to be ethically correct and approved based on APA standards, the following are the five recommendations APA's Science Directorate gives to help researchers steer clear of ethical quandaries:

1. To Discuss the intellectual property frankly

The APA Ethics Code requires psychologists to release their data to others who want to verify their conclusions, provided that participants' confidentiality can be protected and as long as legal rights concerning proprietary data don't preclude their release. However, the code also notes that psychologists who request data in these circumstances can only use the shared data for reanalysis; for any other use, they must obtain a prior written agreement. The study satisfies this condition as the the subjects responses are kept Anonymous.

2. Being conscious of multiple roles

Experts recommend that supervisors set up timely and specific methods to give students feedback and keep a record of the supervision, including meeting times, issues discussed and duties assigned. The given studies procedure gave the student the liberty to self report their answers.

3. Following the informed-consent rules

When done properly, the consent process ensures that individuals are voluntarily participating in the research with full knowledge of relevant risks and benefits. The students volunteered for the pirpose of this study.

4. Respecting confidentiality and privacy of the subjects:

Upholding individuals' rights to confidentiality and privacy is a central tenet of every psychologist's work. research participants have the freedom to choose how much information about themselves they will reveal and under what circumstances. Under the self-report condition of giving data, the students were hence protected under the APA ethics.
And hence, this was an ethical study based on the APA standards.

*Major strengths of article/research design

Consequently, despite a few limitations, this study brought an important contribution. The results indicated that social competence and psychological vulnerability are important factors in Facebook addiction. Current findings could help to improve our knowledge about the nature of Facebook addiction. Finally, this study suggests and gives put the various ways in how the universities should offer services, which would help students in their social competence, in order to eradicate Facebook addiction. The study suggests that universities need to develop intervention programs, such as, psychotherapy groups, group counseling, in order to support students who suffer from psychological vulnerability. In this way, the study helps in giving intervention strategies on how facebook addiction can be prevented in a proactive manner.

*Was this a sound study & why ?:

This study’s findings can be considered reasonable, in terms of some theoretical notions. It can be inferred that the current findings correspond to previous research results. In conclusion, in terms of the understanding the nature of Facebook addiction, social competence, which affects feedback of others, and psychological vulnerability, which is closely related to affirmation by others, was approached under the same framework in the scope of this research study. In addition, social competence and psychological vulnerability, consistent concepts within a broader perspective, were found to be negative predictors of Facebook addiction, in line with previous investigations which throw new light on the direction of the existing problem and further research on it.

*How to improvise the study/experiment:

There were a few Major limitations associated with the study. Firstly, this study was conducted with the students of only one university in Turkey. In terms of generalizability of this study, the sample size is very limited. A replication of this study, to target other student populations of different age groups and cultures, should be carried out in order to generate a more tangible relationship among Facebook addiction, social competence, and psychological vulnerability. Secondly, a correlational research design was used in the current study with cross-sectional sample.Hence, no cause-effect relationship exists between the variables.
Lastly, all data were based on the students’ self-report responses. Using multiple methods, such as a mix method research design, may be useful in decreasing the “subjectivity” limitation of the findings and enhancing the validity of the results.

*Further studies:
Future studies, using a longitudinal and experimental design, may specify the directionality of the relationships among the variables

Part C
*Learnt experiences from the article :

Upon going through the Given study and doing a small review of literature, I found that the given study is in sync with the prior research studies done on this topic. But through this studys current findings helps us to improve our knowledge about the nature of Facebook addiction.
Moreover the study also provides us with new intervention strategies that universities cpuld offer services, which would inturn help students in their social competence, in order to eradicate Facebook addiction.I found these interventions quiet novel approches to be followed in our university campus. The suggested intervention programs by the study are: psychotherapy groups, group counseling, in order to support students who suffer from psychological vulnerability. In this way, I have learnt how Facebook addiction can be prevented in a proactive manner with the help of intervention programs within the university campus
