RE: Sect. 1 Week 13 DQ 11: House Bill 54

4a. I do support the bill as written, but there is one thing that I think should be different and that is when getting a medicine prescribed, there should be proof of identification. I believe that this bill provides an alternative option to chose the way they die, when it comes to a certain situation.

4b. I support this bill because it has a clear understanding and a certain guideline towards physician assisted suicide. It just allows for the patients to have a say of what they want to do with their life, and they could die with dignity and one last huge decision before passing on. I also believe that this gives the patient to enjoy their last moments without wondering what could happen if they further their live with an illness; ending it fearlessly and painlessly. According to Oderberg, the right of autonomy is about the how and when to end your life.

4c. Although some may think that this is very unethical, and reject the bill, but believe the decision is ultimately up to the patient, and what care they prefer to go. An objection would be the 15 day waiting period, i just do not believe that the 15 days is enough time to decide especially when their life might depend on it.

4d. I believe the most important thing for legislators to consider is the rights of the patients. If the patient wants to take the route of physician assisted suicide, it will provide a way to respect the autonomy of the patient. I also think that reaching out and potentially talking to their doctor or anything they comfortable with making the decision about what they should do.

(Answer) The piece above is a person’s opinion about the details of the House Bill 54 that concerns euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. This person talks about how she/he agrees with the bill that a patient in pain who may wish to end their life, has the right to.

However, she/he desires a little more freedom for the patient. They wish that the patient would not have to provide too much identification at the pharmacy, there should not be a 15 day waiting period to gain approval and other such tangents.

One might subjectively agree or disagree with this opinion. However, when such bills are outlined, it is important to remember that it is applicable to every single individual within the state or jurisdiction that the bill has been adapted to.

Let us assume that the person writing this piece is of a sane and rational mind and will use this bill responsibly. However, there might be other healthy individuals with suicidal tendencies who genuinely require professional counseling. Easy access to euthanasia methods might end a life of a mental patient who would have easily recovered and been happy again with life after receiving the proper attention. Furthermore, certain diseases might be painful but, also curable. Patients undergoing too much pain might want to end their life without being too prudent about the future. Such cases and many other unique cases might require these strict rules that decide about the life of an actual human being. It might, therefore, be necessary to delicately design such bills with a careful consideration of as many kinds of people, issues and circumstances as possible.
