Explanation / Answer
What is the “paradox of the Dumbest Generation”? What is Bauerlein’s tentative explanation for the paradox?
Ans - According to Mark Bauerlein, there are some trends between youth and young adults of America that is rather upsetting. These trends are increase in drop-out from high school or college, decreasing literacy rates and the importance of traditional method of teaching is continuously degrading. He also claims that the youth of this generation have different approach in how they use their time, from past generations. To prove these points, he proposes some probable descriptions as to why this generation has changed. The arrival of digital media and technology is affecting this generation at an alarming rate.
He finds some major cracks with the thinking linked with the digital mode and he is not quite convinced that it is helpful to youths and the education system. He shows multiple facets of how teachers are failing in helping students. He believes the impulse for digital media in the classroom, lack of presence of a proper knowledge-base, and the lack of support for the conventional values of the past have all stalled teachers from giving students a proper education that will remain with them. Although he agrees that digital media is an immense provider of knowledge and information, he disproves the idea that it is vesting knowledge of the students. He uses statistics like the NAEP test which compared reading results of 12th graders of those of 1992 and that of 2005. Reading aptitude from 2005 reduced as compared to the rates of students in 1992 likely indicates that digital developments does not always contributes in intelligence.
