Question
Human behavior and thought is influenced by both the environmental and biological conditions, sometimes the 2 are related and sometimes they are not. For this assignment I need to search and find something online or or newspapers about 1 of human behavior and thought and write a summary about it and the summary must include: - the specific biological component -the fundamental details about the biological component from the text -the specific psychological component -the fundamental details about the psychological component from the text -additional details about the biological and psychological components as described by the article/example Human behavior and thought is influenced by both the environmental and biological conditions, sometimes the 2 are related and sometimes they are not. Psychologists over the years have explored and debated about the environmental( that is the nurture view) or biological basis ( the role of nature) of behaviour. Some psychologist emphasise on one of the two factors. However, there is a consensus among many psychologists that both biological phenomenon such as neurochemical processes and genetic factors, and environmental changes can equally influence the behaviour and thinking in individuals. More and more researchers are now sensitive to reporting both the biological basis behind behaviour and the external environmental factors which further promote or sustain the behavioural change or thoughts. An instance of such a development can be seen in the recent study in psychoneuroimmunology by Lee S. Berk as reported in a news article in the Science Daily( 2018). In the study, the researcher showed that dark chocolate consumption reduces stress and inflammation, improves memory, immunity and mood.
The study thus shows that the health benefits of eating certain types of dark chocolate occurs due to the biological or chemical reactions triggered by the components of dark cocao found in the chocolate. That is , it supports the biological basis of behavioral changes due to chocolate consumption. The flavonoids found in cacao were found to be extremely potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, which are known to have positive effect on brain and cardiovascular health particularly in the activation of the hypothalamus which is the reward center in the human mind and creates feelings of pleasure and well being.
In addition, there is a second component to the study as which shows the effect of environmental inluences- that consuming dark chocolate that has a high concentration of cacao (minimally 70% cacao, 30% organic cane sugar) has positive effects on stress levels, inflammation, mood, memory and immunity. The enhanced memory and mood creates feelings of well being in the individual and this further helps to sustain positive emotions. Thus, those sections of the population which have an access to dark chocolates are more likely to experience the positive health outcomes of dark chocolate over the long term consumption. The study thus incorporates the psycho- biological component of chocolate consumption by incorporating biological components of neurochemistry of the brain, level of immunity, and psychological constructs of memory, mood and the level of stress as experienced by the research participants.
