Explanation / Answer

1. The renal cortex is the outer portion of the kidney between the renal capsule and the renal medulla.

2. The base of each pyramid faces the outer portion of the kidney, which is called the renal cortex. The renal cortex is located between the renal medulla and the renal capsule. The reason Renal pyramids appear as though they are stripped because they are situated in segments of parallel nephrons.

3. The pyramids consist mainly of tubules that transport urine from the cortical, or outer, part of the kidney, where urine is produced, to the calyces, or cup-shaped cavities in which urine collects before it passes through the ureter to the bladder.

4. The ureters take urine produced by the kidneys to the bladder.

5. The nephron is the microscopic structural and functional unit of the kidney. It is composed of a renal corpuscle and a renal tubule. The renal corpuscle consists of a tuft of capillaries called a glomerulus and an encompassing Bowman's capsule.
