elcome to Discussion 10.1! This week we’ll review the documentary Sicko and we’ll reflect on the central themes. In doing so, we’ll apply our knowledge of the healthcare disparity across various demographics. For our discussion, please address the following: Go to YouTube.com and search “Sicko Michael Moore”. If you do not have access to videos, you can look this up online to read an overview. What is a health disparity? How is the affected by our demographics (gender, race, age, income etc.)? Have you faced (or heard of) any issues with today’s healthcare system? If so, please share your observations (within your comfort level). In your opinion, should healthcare be free for everyone? Why/Why not?
Explanation / Answer
Health disparities is a concept where people from different socio, political, geographical and economical spheres get different kind of medical treatments. Access to proper healthcare is most of the time accessible to people from elite communities who are rich, who belong to the majority such as race, ethnicity, religion etc. This difference will be very visible in most of the countries, especially in countries that has a diverse population from different social groups.
I've once witnessed this in one of the private hospitals which refused to provide treatment because they didn't have enough money to pay for the treatment. Whereas, rich people with enough social support where able to get the treatment immediately and I later learnt that the person who was denied died because he was not able to collect enough money for the treatment.
In my opinion, health care should be provided by the government equally to all the citizens for free of cost because one of the most important duty of any government is the welfare and wellbeing of its citizens. Equality as a social justice should be safe guarded by the government in all the spheres of life including healthcare.
