Scenario You're in the breakroom at work when you see a co-worker posting a cartoon on the bulletin board. You read it as you pass, and it is a joke about women breastfeeding in public. A male employee walks up, looks at it, and starts laughing. Other male employees walk up, and one takes it down saying he is going to make copies for everyone. What do you do?

Explanation / Answer

Being a woman, this behaviour is something that I would not tolerate at any costs. I have always abhorred sexist jokes because they appear to play a great role in perpetuating negative gender stereotypes. In a professional setting, such jokes are even more unsuitable. The fact that they are put on public display with people attempting to circulate it is even more distressing. I would put forward my views and explain to the employees that such jokes can seriously cause offence to many individuals. Perhaps I would be called ‘prudish’ and a spoiled sport’ for this but I would definitely not simply join in with them.
