Question

Case 1----Jenna is two blocks away from the World Trade Center when it is hit by the planes on 9/11. She spends the day trying to get off the island of Manhattan on foot with thousands of other people. Three weeks after the event of 9/11, her heart races every time she hears a plane overhead, and she frequently has images of the planes hitting the towers pop into her mind.

Case 2----John is very confident; he believes that he is capable of just about anything he puts his mind to and is a very gifted and talented individual. He has recently quit his job as an advertising executive because he is embarking on his dream writing the next great American novel.

Case 3----A year ago, Julie lost her youngest daughter to cancer. She has trouble enjoying many daily events because they remind her of her daughter. Her daughter’s room is intact in exactly the form it was in when she was alive.

Considering these three cases, comment on one of them and explain why or why not one of these cases should be labeled as abnormal.

Explanation / Answer

Case 3 can be labeled as abnormal. While in first case, it has just been 3 weeks that Jenna went through that tragic incident and racing of heart and having images ibuilding n mind for some duration post such a tragic event is quiet normal. Its too recent to be labeled as post traumatic disorder.

What john does in case 2 is again common and many ambitious people take such risks to follow their passion.

What is alarming in case three is that apart from keeping her late daughter's room intact even after a year, Julie has difficulty attending to her daily events. If symptoms like these appear for longerthan 6 months, they are indication of depression. In the language of DSM ( Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders), it is called Complicated Grief Disorder also called traumatic or prolonged grief.
