Question
What do you think would happen today if we produced an over-the-counter (OTC) product which was on the shelves of convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores and the use of this product (if used as directed) resulted in premature death, reduced quality of life indicators, increased health care costs, and had so many detrimental health and social consequences? This OTC product and tobacco are both consumer products and with both products the consumer used the product as directed—do you think they would be viewed and treated differently? Why do we permit tobacco, which is the number 1 preventable cause of death in the US, to be sold?
Explanation / Answer
Answer:
OTC drugs are those drugs that we can buy without the medical prescription. They are regulated by FDA.
Any OTC must include doses, ingredients, and labelling.
On the other hand, tobacco is also under the regulation of FDA since 2009 after Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act passed by Congress.
According to my view, we cannot compare OTC drugs to tobacco because tobacco is not an over the counter drug and there are several products that contain tobacco as an ingredient.
It is true fact that use of tobacco is very harmful and it is one of the main cause of death not only in the U.S but across the globe.
In order to reduce the health hazard and death due to tobacco use. The government should regulate the limit of usage of tobacco.
