Question

Apply each of the 3 main sociological theories to RACE and how would a theorist from each perspective (structural functionalist, conflict, symbolic interactionist) view this social problem? Apply each of the 3 main sociological theories to RACE and how would a theorist from each perspective (structural functionalist, conflict, symbolic interactionist) view this social problem? Apply each of the 3 main sociological theories to RACE and how would a theorist from each perspective (structural functionalist, conflict, symbolic interactionist) view this social problem?

Explanation / Answer

Structural Functionalism explains society as a complex system whose parts work together to maintain stability and solidarity. So according to this theory, races are parts of the wider society that don’t do any harm but function with other groups without much conflict.

Conflict theory suggests that the society is at a continuous war over the limited resources and that social order is maintained by domination and power rather than consensus and conformity. This explains why there is racism in some countries that limit the minority races from most of the resources by institutionalizing racism thereby denying education, employment, housing etc.

Symbolic Interactionism theory suggests that although people are individuals, their behaviors are largely based upon the interaction they hold in the society. They approach the world with whatever things they learnt from their races of origin and constantly learn. One’s background or race determines how one would interact, treat, respect and live with others in the society.
