Question
Georgie is very allergic to grass and weeds in the summer. As a result he takes a daily dose of Benedryl, an antihistamine – which works by suppressing mast cell activity. One day a very heavy dose of pollen in the air resulted in Georgie taking a double dose of antihistamine. Later in the morning he cuts his finger. It is only about 24 hours later that the cut shows signs of inflammation. How come? [3 pts] A biopsy of the skin is performed. Slides of the tissues are prepared. Your task is to identify which slide shows dense irregular connective tissue and which slide shows areolar tissue. How do you make the distinction? [3 pts]
Not sure how to answer this one. Is the antihistiamine suppressing the reaction of his body to react to his cut? thank you. Lost about the tissue too. I thought connective tissue attatched to ligaments . How would it show in a cut?
Explanation / Answer
Antihistamines are taken to reduce the allergic reactions. But indirectly they reduce the body's response of inflammation. As seen in this case, a cut should immediately lead to inflammation. But, we see that inflammation only occurs after 24 hours. This indicates the antihistamine is responsible for the slow response of the immune system.
-----------
The areolar tissue is responsible for the attachment of epithelial tissue to the underlying layers. The areolar tissue can be identified by the loose fibers with lots of spaces filled with interstitial fluid in it.
In the irregular connective tissue, we see fibers which are not arranged in a regular manner. They are arranged haphazardly. This is to endure stress in different directions. The fibers are present more densely without spaces.
