Explanation / Answer

Myelin is basically like the resistant coating around the live electrical wires. It increases the resistance and decreases the capacitance across the cell membrane of the neurons. They block, cover the Na+ and K+ ion channels which inhibit the transmittance of electrical current across the length of the axon. They cause the action potential to jump from node of ranvier to another because of which the electrical potential travels faster. This process is called saltatory conduction- lacking in multiple sclerosis. Due to the lack of myelination the action potential is conducted slowly and causes delay in reception and action, slowing down the senses.

saltatory conduction is faster because the action potential jumps from one point to a far away point whereas in normal conduction the actional potential walks from one point to the adjacent which is why it is slower. Senses (heat, vision, smell, pain) need to travel fast- from reception to processing to signaling. MS is linked to cognitive dysfunction, lack of senses, fatigue, loss of muscluar function etc.
