Question
6. In each of the following scenarios, will an action potential be produced? The postsynaptic neuron has a resting membrane potential of-70 mV. Please explain and show calculations. EPSP-excitatory post synaptic potential (+), IPSP = inhibitory post synaptic potential (-) Trigger Zone Fourteen neurons synapse on one postsynaptic neuron. At the trigger zone 11 of the neurons produce EPSPs of 2 each, the other three produce IPSPs of 3 mV each. The threshold for the postsynaptic cell is -60 mV a. b. Fifteen neurons synapse on the postsynaptio neuron. At the trigger zone, 14 of the neurons produce EPSPs of 2mV each and the other one neuron produces and IPSP of 9 mV. The threshold for the postsynaptic neuron is -50 mVExplanation / Answer
(a) Total EPSPs produced = 11*2 = 22mV
Total IPSPs produced = 3*(-3) = - 9 mV
Potential developed by neurons = 22-9 = 13mV
Potential difference = - 70 + 13 = - 57 mV
The potential difference is greater than the threshold potential ( - 57 > - 60 mV). The depolarization is activated when the membrane potential is mor than threshold value. Hence action potential will be generated.
(b) Total EPSPs = 14*2 = 28mV
Total IPSPs produced = 1*(-9) = - 9mV
Potential developed by neurons = 28-9 = 19 mV
Potential difference = - 70 + 19 = - 51mV
The potential difference is lower than the threshold value. Hence the post synaptic neurons will not be depolarized. Hence no action potential.
