GENETICS
SHOW ALL WORK
In chickens, sex is determined on sex chromosomes W and Z. To be a female you have a heterozygous WZ chromosome type and to be male you have ZZ chromosome type. It has been found that beak color is carried on the Z chromosome, it being incompletely dominant between red and yellow giving a heterozygous orange (Rr) color. Also found on the Z chromosome is the trait for the color of the comb. The pattern is Co-Dominant between blue and black giving a striped heterozygous condition (Bb). IN addition there are two Autosomal traits. The first is a trait that determines if the comb is (Cc) present or missing, having a comb is the dominant condition. The second autosomal trait is a multi-allelic trait that determines the shape of the wattle with square wattle (iS) being dominant to round (iR) and triangle (iT) and round (iR) dominant to triangle (iS), thus triangle is only expressed if homozygous.
If you Cross a Rooster with an orange beak and a striped comb and square wattle who
Explanation / Answer
Ans.
Rooster = Orange beak , Striped comb , Square wattle ( ZRBZrb Cc iSiT )
Father = kicked a comb , Triangle shaped wattle ( ZZcc iTiT )
Mother = Black comb , Yellow beak ( ZrbWCC iSiS )
Hen = Red beak , Blue comb , Heterozygous Round wattle ( ZRbWCC iRiT )
Parents = Homozygous dominant for Comb ( CC )
Now Cross,
Rooster = ( ZRBZrb Cc iSiT )
gives gametes,
ZR Zb C iS ; ZR Zb C iT ; ZR Zb c iS ; ZR Zb c iT ; ZR ZB C iS ; ZR ZB C iT ; ZR ZB c iS ; ZR ZB c iT ;
Zr Zb C iS ; Zr Zb C iT ; Zr Zb c iS ; Zr Zb c iT ; Zr ZB C iS ; Zr ZB C iT ; Zr ZB c iS ; Zr ZB c iT .
Hen = ( ZRbWCC iRiT )
gives gametes,
ZRb C iR ; ZRb C iT ; WC iR ; WC iT .
On Cross,
Rest Can be Done.
