SHORT ANSWER ESSAY: The beginning of Chapter 7 explains that choosing an appropriate test depends on several factors. People differ in age, fitness level, known health problems, and risks of CHD. Also, financial considerations determine the amount of time that can be devoted to each person (e.g., physician versus fitness professional administering the test) and the work tasks available. Describe scenarios in which each of the following Exercise Tests would be most appropriately used and elaborate on WHY you made that choice. (Demonstrate critical thinking in rationale for why)

a. Graded Exercise Test

b. Mile Run Test

c. 1 Mile Walk Test

d. Minute Step Test

Explanation / Answer

a. Graded exercise test: This is normally called stress test, stress electrocardiogram, or treadmill test. It is used to normally check how heart responds to exercise conditions. The heart normally contracts due to the spread of electrical activity of heart cells. With exercise and varying types of different diseases, there can be seen changes in the elecrical activity of heart cells. The responses rates of heart cells or the lectrical activities are recorded and, finally mapped as an ECG.

b. Mile run test: This test measures aerobic fitness and leg muscles endurance. Lets consider thos to be a one mile test. Then, the aim of this test will be to complete one mile run in thr shortest possible time. Large group of athlestes can be tested at once, but practice and pacing is required to attain better results. Its main purpose is to measure endurance of muscles and fitness.

c. 1 mile walk test: This is similar to mile run test. This test measures fitness and people are suggested to walk for a mile within the shortest possible time at a constant walking pace during entire test. The heart rate count is measured at the end of the test either manually or using heart rate monitor for 15 seconds time. The walking time and heart rate score at the end are considered when a heart rate monitor is used. This test also measures fitness.

d. minute step test: This is normally used to test cardiovascular endurance. On a bench of 12-inch height, step on with one leg after another and then step off or down with one leg after another. Continue the same procedure for one minute. Let this be done at constant pace. At the end of the one minute, measure the pulse rate immediately. The lower heart ratee denotes the fitter you are.
