Explanation / Answer

Answer 11:-

Blurred vision or fuzzy vision is a common complaint in elderly. At the age of 60 and above, vision loss is a major health care problem. There are many reasons for the blurring of vision due to ageing.

The common causes that can lead to fuzzy of blurred vision in elderly are as given below.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) :- The macular degeneration occurs due to ageing. The macula (the center of the retina at the back of the eye) is affected and causes central vision loss. The macula is the part of the retina responsible for fine and color vision. Treatment includes injections of antiangiogenic drugs into the eye to stop formation of new blood vessels and to block the leaking from the abnormal vessels that cause wet macular degeneration.

Cataracts :- It is the most common cause of fuzzy vision. Cataracts are the cloudy or opaque areas in the lens of the eye. Usually cataracts develop in both eyes, but development of cataract in one eye might be faster than the other. Treatment includes surgical removal of the affected lens and implanting the artificial lens.

Dry eye:- It is a condition in which an individual produces few or tears with altered composition. Tears are necessary to maintain the health of the surface of the eye and thus provide clear vision. Treatment includes administration of ‘tear drops’ at regular intervals.

Glaucoma:- The pressure inside the eye increases in glaucoma. The increase in pressure occurs due to changes in production of vitreous fluid inside the eye ball. The increased pressure may damage the optic nerve resulting in vision loss. Treatment includes eye drops in order to reduce pressure, or injections to the eye to maintain the normal vitreous fluid..

Retinal detachment:- It is a tearing or separation of the retina from the underlying tissue. Retinal detachment occurs spontaneously due to changes in the composition of vitreous fluid in the eyeball. Chronic glaucoma may lead to retinal detachment.
