Managerial Decision Modeling with Spreadsheets 3rd
Chap 10 Simulation Modeling
1. Describe two systems or processes where you work (or another company you are familiar with) which would be good candidates for simulation modeling. Briefly explain your answer.
2. If you were to choose one of these for a school simulation modeling project, which would you choose? Briefly explain your selection.
3. If you were to choose one of these for a work simulation modeling project, which would you choose? Briefly explain your selection.
Explanation / Answer
Simulation modeling: While working in industry I have worked in process improvement a lot.
I remember few instances which were simulated first and then implemented in the field.
1. Secondary sales captures process: My client used to use very basic model for capturing sales and they din't have clear idea of suggested sales, inventory etc. We have identified gaps and went ahead with the best solution in the industry. We have implemented a system in PILOT. First we did simulation in PILOT area and it was successful.
In order to improve that process/structure we have asked all the salesmen to use hand held terminal which would be used for sales capture and those devices were synced with real time ERP system. ERP system used to show exact inventory available in the system.
2. Promoter Transfer process: There is huge movement of sales force/field force from one outlet to other that causes havoc in the system as well. Promoter transfer process is when brand promoter takes transfer from one store to another store in order to be more productive and make more business out of it.
This looks very simple process however while making sure it happens both in field and system was actually a rocket science. To make seamless complications we did system integration with the field force and provided access to field force so that as soon as field manager does change in the system then only it should reflect on the field.
In above 2 process implementations, I feel the first was properly simulated and implemented successfully. While the later one was also a success with few areas of improvements.
