Question

1. Pete burned his hand cooking dinner. With his knowledge of neurophysiology he was able to explain the sequence of pain sensations that he felt. He remembered that the sensation of sharp, pricking, localized pain is conducted by myelinated fibers with a diameter of 2 to 6 m. And nerve fibers that conduct the sensation of burning, aching, not well-localized pain are unmyelinated with a diameter of 0.5 to 2 m. Describe the sequence of pain sensations that Pete felt after burning his hand. Explain why there are two different systems for transmitting pain. 2. Mrs. Anymom was admitted to the hospital with dehydration. She was also recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her cognitive abilities, including memory and attention span, had been declining for some time. And her personality changed. She was irritable, moody, disoriented and confused. What areas of her brain have most likely been affected, showing either a decrease in size or amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. 3. Kathy Klutz falls down a flight of stairs and in the process bumps her head several times. Shortly after her fall she starts to experience headaches and blurred vision. Diagnostic tests at the hospital reveal an epidural hematoma (broken blood vessels) in the temporoparietal area that is expanding downward to press against the brain stem. What further symptoms would you expect to observe from this injury?

Explanation / Answer

1) The sharp, pricking localised pain is conducted by myelinated neurons while the dull, aching pain is transmitted by unmyelinated neurons. The acute type of pain is essential for survival and is the warning to an acute and usually temporary assault to the system. An exams of this type of pain is acute myocardial infarction. The second type of pain is dull aching and is hard to control. This pain will persist till the pathology is corrected.
