Dorsal root emerges from spinal cord and transmits sensory information to spinal cord as afferent sensory part of spinal nerve. Dorsal root has a small swelling called dorsal root ganglion which contains cell bodies of axons and transmits sensory impulse to spinal cord from sensory nerve. Anesthetic is injected into dorsal root ganglion to slow down or block nerve impulses to alleviate sensation of pain in patients.
